16th Annual Clifton O. Dummett, Jr. Memorial Lecture & Workshop From SDF to Sedation: Navigating Risk - FRIDAY ONLY (In Person)

This lecture will provide dental professionals a review of a broad spectrum of white lesions that may be encountered in the oral cavity. Numerous clinical images will be provided to give the clinician a thorough review of benign, premalignant and malignant pathologic processes. This course also covers the wide variety of ulcers that may be encountered in the oral cavity.

This course and future courses in Dentistry for the Pediatric Patient are named in memory of Dr. Clifton O. Dummett Jr., a beloved faculty member in the Pediatric Dentistry Department of LSU School of Dentistry from 1974 to 2006.  Dr. Dummett served as Pediatric Dentistry Department Head from 2000 until his retirement in2006 when he was honored with the title Professor Emeritus.

Overview & Learning Objectives

Friday Lecture Overview

In recent years, the armamentarium available to Pediatric Dentists has changed to include robust prevention measure such as SDF, Hall Crown Technique. Despite these innovations, some children will still need pharmacologic behavior guidance in the form of procedural sedation. This course will go through the basics of risk assessment, preventive measures, restorative techniques and finally risk management for procedural sedation.

After attending this lecture, participants should be better able to:

  • Understand how risk assessment is incorporated into a treatment plan
  • How Active Surveillance using preventive techniques can benefit a child behaviorally
  • How SDF, Hall Technique and Bioactive Restoratives can be incorporated into prevention plan
  • How to assess a child airway and systemic health to reduce morbidity and morality

S. Thikkurissy, DDS, MS

S. Thikkurissy, DDS, MS is a Professor and Robert Creedon Endowed Chair of Dentistry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dr. Thikkurissy obtained his DDS from New York University. He completed the program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Wright Patterson and was in active duty in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, serving as Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at Ramstein AFB in Germany. Dr. Thikkurissy obtained his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry as well as a master's degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He was Director of the Predoctoral Program in Pediatric Dentistry from 2006-2011 and Director of Inpatient Dental Services at Nationwide Children's Hospital from 2010-2013. Dr. Thikkurissy is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, has served as Chair of the AAPD Committee on Sedation and Anesthesia, and on the he ADA Committee on Dental Education and Licensure group on Sedation. He has lectured in 22 states, and internationally. He has 40 peer-reviewed publications primarily in the areas of morbidities, quality of life, and pain management in children.

Giulia Castrigano, DMD, MS

Giulia Castrigano, DMD, MS is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Fairfield Satellite clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She earned her DMD from the University of Kentucky and completed a general practice residency at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her certificate in pediatric dentistry and master’s degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Castrigano worked in private practice for 5 years before joining the faculty at Cincinnati Children’s, where she teaches the graduate pediatric dentistry residents and maintains a clinical practice.

If a course is canceled, the Academy will refund the full tuition. If you cancel your registration, the Academy will refund the tuition you paid (minus an administrative cancellation fee).
