Description:

Overview & Learning Objectives

In Louisiana, prior to taking dental x-rays, all dental assistants must be in compliance with state laws governing the practice of dentistry. This course satisfies the requirements of the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry as defined in Louisiana Dental Practice Act R.S. 37:792. This course is also approved by the Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners. A written test given by our faculty completes their requirements. When registering, please let us know if you will be working in Mississippi.

This course will provide training for auxiliary personnel in the technique of accurate intraoral dental radiography. Practical experience will be provided in radiographic technique, darkroom procedures, and mounting intraoral x-rays. The long cone paralleling technique will be emphasized. The bisecting the angle technique will be presented in theory and in practice. Each participant will be required to take a full mouth set of radiographs on a dry skull. An understanding of the factors involved is necessary to achieve satisfactory results. Therefore, theory will be presented only to the extent of the participant's need to understand the reasons for various technique procedures, and the background for the safe and efficient use of dental x-ray equipment. After completing this course, participants should be better able to:

  • Take diagnostic radiographs while minimizing radiation to patient and self
  • Properly place Rinn Instruments intraorally
  • Differentiate which instruments are used for which radiographs
  • Correct errors caused by improper angulation (elongation, forshortening, or overlapping)
  • Should be able to reduce gag reflex on patients
  • Should know which technical factors to change increase or decrease film density/contrast
