Expanded Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA) Training - Lafayette

This is the “next step” for assistants who want to expand their capabilities in dental practice. This course is designed to provide dental assistants with the knowledge and skills they need to perform expanded duty dental assisting functions as specified by Louisiana law.
NOTE: This course is currently full. Please contact the CE office if you wish to be placed on the waiting list.

NOTE: You must submit the following two forms NO LATER than two weeks before the course in order to be considered fully registered in the course. If you do not return these forms by the deadline, you will automatically be removed from the course.

SBET Reimbursement Information

Attention Dental Employers: Qualifying Louisiana dentists could be reimbursed for sending their assistants to EDDA training through the Small Business Employee Training (SBET) training program. For additional information click here. The SBET program application and reimbursement is between you and the SBET of the Louisiana Department of Labor. LSU Continuing Dental Education does not process this paperwork or reimbursement.

Description:

Overview

This is the “next step” for assistants who want to expand their capabilities in dental practice. This course is designed to provide dental assistants with the knowledge and skills they need to perform expanded duty dental assisting functions as specified by Louisiana law. Hands-on exercises will be performed in the laboratory to reinforce the material presented in the lectures. Each participant will be given and must pass a post-course examination to determine their competency.

Upon successful completion of this course and examination and submitting a post-course evaluation, participants will receive a verification of participation letter. To receive your EDDA certification, you must submit this EDDA training verification of participation letter along with the EDDA Application for Certification Confirmation, proof of completion of a Louisiana State Board of Dentistry-approved radiology course, a copy of a current CPR certification card and the required application fee to the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry (LSBD). DO NOT SUBMIT THESE DOCUMENTS TO LSU CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION. The LSBD is the certifying agency for EDDA in Louisiana. After you have submitted a complete application form along with the required documents and fees to the LSBD it could take several weeks for you to receive your certificate by mail. Learning Objectives

After completing the course, participants should be better able to identify, understand, and explain:

  • Function of instruments and materials used in coronal polishing
  • Limitations and uses of coronal polishing technique as contrasted with a prophylaxis
  • Use, care, and lubrication of the right-angle handpiece
    Instruments and materials for suturing
  • Types and levels of sedation
  • Types and uses of dental liners
  • Parts of the Tofflemire matrix retainer
  • Sequence of steps in the placement of an anterior restoration
  • Placement of pit and fissure sealant
  • Groups of extrinsic and intrinsic stains on dentition
  • Process for placing a medicated dressing post-operative
  • Cause and treatment of alveolar osteitis
  • Post-operative instruction to a patient for home care
  • Indications and contraindications for use of nitrous oxide
  • Safety features of the nitrous unit
  • Technique of, application, and monitoring nitrous oxide
  • Purpose of and different types of temporary crowns
  • Proper armamentarium needed for fabrication of a temporary crown
  • Use of rubber dam and the isolation of teeth
  • Manipulation and use of periodontal surgical dressing
  • Methods used for gingival retraction

After completing the course, participants should be better able to demonstrate their knowledge of/ability to perform:

  • Dental anatomy
  • Coronal polishing
  • Removing sutures with a sterile technique
  • Placement of a cavity liner
  • Preparing, placing, wedging, and removing a Tofflemire matrix retainer
  • Etching of a posterior tooth prior to the placement of pit and fissure sealant
  • Gingival retraction using the chemical method
  • Removal of the retraction cord
  • Mixing, placement and removal of periodontal dressing
  • Application of pit and fissure sealants
  • Preparation needed before placement of sealants
  • Placement of temporary filling

Karen Coco, EDDA has 40 years of dental assisting experience. She is a dental assistant in private practice and is the Lafayette EDDA Team leader. Ms. Coco has taught EDDA courses for six years.

Loretta Hoyer, EDDA

Loretta Hoyer, EDDA has 45 years of dental assisting experience. She is a dental assistant/lab technician in private practice and has taught EDDA courses for two years.

Telisa Rogers, EDDA

Telisa Rogers, EDDA has 20 years of dental assisting experience. She is the lead dental assistant at a private practice and has taught EDDA courses for five years.

Location Information

This course will be held partially at Lafayette General Medical Center at 1214 Coolidge Boulevard and partially at a private dental practice in Lafayette, Louisiana. Friday, please park on the TOP level of the parking garage attached to the Burdin Riehl building (located directly across the street from Lafayette General Medical Center). You can take the garage elevator to the ground level and walk across the street, entering on Hospital Drive or take the garage elevator to the third floor, enter Burdin Riehl Building, take the crosswalk to The Pavilion elevator. This elevator will bring you into the lobby of LGMC. The building and crosswalk are unlocked at 6am. Saturday-Sunday, please park on any level of the parking garage attached to the Burdin Riehl building (located directly across the street from Lafayette General Medical Center). The building is closed and the parking is not used by patients or staff on Saturdays and Sundays. Due to the fact that the building is locked on the weekends, the crosswalk will not be accessible.

LSUCDE video courses are live-streamed via BlueJeans. CE administrators perform roll call and random check-ins via the chat window in BlueJeans. If you miss one or more check-ins it could affect your credits. Before the course you will receive three links: a link to the meeting, a link to a short test, and a link to a course evaluation. You must submit the test and evaluation in order to receive credit. The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry counts CE hours earned through LSUCDE live video conference as in-person hours.

Cancellation & Refund Policy:
The Louisiana Academy of Continuing Dental Education, Inc. (d/b/a: LSU Health New Orleans Continuing Dental Education) reserves the right to cancel any course should circumstances warrant such action. If a course is canceled, the Academy will refund the full tuition. If you cancel your registration, the Academy will refund the tuition you paid (minus an administrative cancellation fee).

Written cancellation requests can be submitted by mail, by fax at 504-941-8403, or email at CDE@lsuhsc.edu. If LSU Health New Orleans CDE receives notification of your cancellation after the specified deadline, this will result in forfeiture of your entire tuition.
